Project 6: Digitizing Media

Project Description: To Digitize the school's department's Video Tapes

Cause of Project:
DVDs are 25 times thinner than Video Tapes
Some media is only on Video Tapes, not DVDs
The School's Video Tapes are slowly wearing out
PAL Video Tapes do not work with the Flat Screen TVs
You can't put a Video Tape in a computer and be able to play it
Video Tapes aren't an example of a "21st Century Environment"

Difficulty: Intermediate

Estimated Length of Project: 6 months

What I am doing:
Stage 1: Research how many Video Tapes are in each department (50% done)
Stage 2: Decide whether to digitize the Video Tapes into DVD or mp4 (we have a favor)
Stage 3: Decide how to distribute the media (brainstorming ideas)
Stage 4: Decide how to digitize the Video Tapes (depends on Stage 2)
Stage 5: Digitize the Video Tapes (depends on Stage 4)
Stage 6: Organize the media (depends on Stage 2)
Stage 7: Show teachers & students how to access the media (depends on Stage 2)

Challenges:
To count the Video Tapes (one class room had 100+)

Status: Still in progress (currently in Stage 1)

Project 5: Install RAM into HKC iMac

Project Description: Install 512MB RAM into the ELC iMac

Cause of Project: Computer was running under minimum specifications

Difficulty: Intermediate

Length of Project: ½ lunch time

What I did: Installed an extra 512MB RAM. Instructions can be found here

Challenges: Securing the RAM

Status: Completed

Problem 2: Nano won't show iCal & Contacts

Problem: iPod Nano (3rd Generation) won't show the your calendar events in iCal or your Contacts in the Contacts.

Cause of Problem: Unknown. Probably a bug.

Time needed: 2 minutes

Model: iPod Nano 3rd Generation

First Noticed on: My iPod Nano 3rd Generation

Solution: Reset your iPod (to find out how, go here) then highlight iCal but don't click it, and wait for a period of time. The time is different for different people, but I suggest 1 minute. If it doesn't work, wait a minute longer. Then, do the same for Contacts.

Result: Your calendar events and contacts will show

Other: If it still doesn't show after 10 tries, you should contact Apple

Problem 1: Scanner won't show up on PhotoShop

Problem: The Scanner won't show up on PhotoShop

Cause of Problem: The re-imaging of the iMac removed the software that would have recognized the scanner.

Time needed: 5 minutes

Model: CanoScan LiDE 500F

First noticed on: ELC iMac and Scanner

Solution: Go here then choose your Model (in this case, CanoScan LiDE 500F), select your OS (in this case, Mac OS X) then download the driver. Follow the steps during the installation.

Result: The scanner shows up on PhotoShop under import

Project 4: Install RAM into ELC iMac

Project Description: Install 512MB RAM into the ELC iMac

Cause of Project: Computer was running too slow

Difficulty: N/A

Length of Project: 1 lunch time

What I did: I went to the IT Lab, but since no one was there, I thought Christine Usyack already went to the ELC. She didn't come, so instead I fixed their scanner. I later found out that Christine Usyack got caught up in a meeting/briefing.

Challenges: Finding out what happened to Christine Usyack

Status: Cancelled, I will install RAM in the HKC iMac instead

Project 3: Replace iMac in HKC

Project Description: Replace the iMac in HKC

Cause of Project: HKC supposed Projector input did not work, when really the computer wasn't calibrated to the projector.

Difficulty: Easy

Length of Project: 3 lunch times

What I did: Transfer all files from the old iMac, to an external hard drive, then on to the new iMac.

Challenges: Making sure all the files were transferred safely.

Status: Completed
